The Fiat 126 was launched at the Turin Motor Show of 1972. As the successor to the Fiat 500, it overlapped production with the 500R. The Fiat 126 is a small car that was produced by the Italian car manufacturer Fiat from 1972 to 2000. It was introduced as a replacement for the popular Fiat 500 model and is known for its compact size, fuel efficiency, and easy handling. The car was a popular choice for city driving and was produced in several different variants over the course of its production run. The Fiat 126 featured a rear-engine layout and a small two-cylinder engine as originally used in the Fiat 500. It was also equipped with bigger drum brakes, which improved its braking performance over the earlier Fiat 500 model. Although the car had a more modern look the technic used was still the same as on the Fiat 500. The car was designed to be easy to maintain and repair, with a simple mechanical layout and easy access to its components. With a total production of 4,671,586 vehicles, 1,352,912 cars were built in Italy and 3,318,674 cars in Poland, the 126P also called the Polski Fiat 126. The FSM production in Bielsko-Biała and Tychy was initially for the domestic Polish market. However, in May 1985, Italian production was discontinued and all Fiat models came from Poland under the new name "Fiat 126 - Made by FSM". Zastava in Yugoslavia assembled the Zastava 126 with Polish parts and Fiat Steyr in Austria also produced more than two thousand of the 126. Today, the Fiat 126 is considered a classic car and is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. Restored examples can fetch high prices at auctions and are prized for their rarity and unique style. With its simple design and availability of replacement parts, the Fiat 126 is also a popular choice for those who enjoy restoring classic cars.
